HHWS: Wie war es denn bei dir, wann hast du angefangen?
COPE2: Es war verrückt mit Graffiti anzufangen. Ich habe mir 78/79 die Subway Trains mit meinem Cousin angeschaut. Wir haben uns die Subway Pieces und Wholecars von Leuten wie Comet und Blade, Buck 188 und Phers 1 angeschaut. Das war aufregend. Auch von Mitch 77, Ban 2, 2 Famous und Rip 7. Es war wirklich toll diese ganzen Pieces auf den Subways zu sehen und das hat mich sehr inspiriert.
HHWS: Was für ein Gefühl war es ein Writer zu sein?
COPE2: Du wolltest natürlich King von den Subways werden, wie der King von der Nr.4, der 3 oder der 2. Und wenn du das geschafft hast, dann war es cool nur deine Pieces und Tags darauf zu sehen, du warst der King. Du hattest die meisten Throw-ups, Fill-ins, Outlines und Tags, was du auch alles machen musstest. Wenn du einmal der King einer Linie bist, so wie ich es bei der 4er war, dann willst du King von der 2er oder 5er werden. Es war ein gutes Gefühl, besonders deinen Namen auf dem Subway System durch New York rollen zu sehen.
HHWS: Wie ist es so lange dabei zu sein?
COPE2: Es ist verrückt. Manchmal verstehe ich nicht warum ich immer noch hier bin und das mache. Ich mache das schon so viele Jahre und es ist hart aufzuhören und ich denke ich werde niemals aufhören. Ich weiss es nicht, vielleicht ist es Gottes Plan dass ich Cope 2 bin. Ich liebe es und es ist meine Art zu leben, aber manchmal verstehe ich es nicht.
HHWS: Du hast sehr viel erlebt, woran erinnerst du dich am liebsten?
COPE2: Das besten waren die Subway Trains in den frühen 80ern. Es gab nichts Besseres als die Subway Trains in New York zu bemalen, denn das ist die Geschichte und ich wünschte ich könnte dahin zurück. Ich danke Gott dafür dass ich die Zeit miterleben durfte und die Subway Trains in den frühen 80ern malen konnte.
HHWS: Was macht für dich einen guten Style aus?
COPE2: Meiner Meinung nach ist ein guter Style wenn du dich selbst dadurch präsentierst. Sei du selbst, sauber und mache es mit schönen Farben. Original zu sein ist hart, da du immer von jemandem gelernt hast. Mach einfach deinen eigenen Style.
HHWS: Meinst du mit Original sich selbst gegenüber treu zu sein oder der History von New York treu zu sein?
COPE2: Sei dir selbst treu. Du lernst von irgendjemandem, sei es von New York oder sonst wo in der Welt. Sei du selbst. Original!
HHWS: Was für einen Eindruck hast du von Deutschland?
COPE2: Es ist unglaublich wie sie die Subways und Wände in Deutschland machen. Ich verstehe es nicht. Ich gebe denen so viel Probs. Da ist so viel Energie und Power vorhanden. Ich dachte niemals vor 25 Jahren, als ich auf den New Yorker Subway Trains malte, dass es das jetzt auf der ganzen Welt gibt und es Writer in Deutschland gibt die „some crazy dope hot shit“ machen. Es ist großartig dass sie die Züge und Wholecars machen. Ich sah diese Wholecars in Deutschland und habe den Wholecars die ich in den frühen 80ern in New York gemacht habe nachgetrauert. Das Graffiti in Deutschland ist toll, ich liebe es.
HHWS: Wie siehst du den Zusammenhang von Writing mit der HipHop Kultur?
COPE2: Die HipHop Kultur bestand schon immer aus Writing, Breakdancing, DJ’ing und MC’ing. Nicht jeder Graffiti Künstler mag HipHop, es gibt Writer die Heavy Metal oder Rock hören. Deswegen denke ich, dass Graffiti eine eigene Kultur hat, eine eigene Welt, welche wirklich fantastisch ist. Wir brauchen keinen Rap, wir brauchen kein DJ’ing und Graffiti Writer kann jeder sein. Und das ist es, was es so einzigartig macht.
HHWS: Das Internet ist für Writer eine weltweite Plattform. Was hältst du davon?
COPE2: Es ist verrückt. Es waren immer Graffiti Magazine, nun ist es das Internet. Wenn du ein Throw-Up machst, dann ist es in 5 Minuten im Internet und die ganze Welt kann es sehen. Ich verstehe es nicht, ich schätze dass ist die Zeit und das Leben. Alles verändert sich und du musst mit den Veränderungen und der Zeit gehen.
HHWS: Was für Pläne hast du für die Zukunft?
COPE2: Ich weiss nicht, einfach Tag für Tag leben und ich selbst sein, Cope2. Du weißt, ich mache mein Ding, reise in der Welt herum und mache Kunstshows. Vielleicht auch eines Tages eine Firma mit Graffiti. Einfach nur versuchen ich selbst zu sein.
HHWS: Gehst du immer noch raus und bombst?
COPE2: Oh yeah, natürlich, ich bombe immer noch. Ich gebe einen Scheiss darauf, denn wir leben nicht für immer. Scheiss drauf. Zeige dein Ding und mach es für dich selbst. Ich liebe es zu bomben. Ich versuche Züge zu machen aber ich versuche auch cool zu bleiben, da das Gesetz in New York mich immer noch stresst. Ich versuche ein bisschen ruhiger zu sein.
HHWS: Ich habe das Video von dir gesehen wo du bomben gehst.
COPE2: Yeah, das war vor 6 Jahren. Das hat mir mit dem Gesetz in New York einigen Ärger gebracht. Aber jetzt arbeite ich an der DVD „Cope 2 – The Graffiti Overdose“, welche in der Weihnachtszeit herauskommen soll. Sie wird billig sein. Haltet Ausschau danach!

HHWS: How was it for you to start with graffiti?
COPE2: Man, it was crazy starting with graffiti. I was just looking at the subway trains with my cousin back in 78/79. We were watching at the subway pieces and wholecars by people like Comet and Blade, Buck 188 and Phers 1. That was amazing, you know. Also Mitch 77, Ban 2, 2 Feenous, Rip 7. It was really amazing to see all these pieces on the subways and that really inspired me.
HHWS: What kind of feeling was it to be a writer?
COPE2: You basically want to become the king of the subway trains, like king of the No. 4, the 3, the 2. And when you do that, it was cool to see only your pieces and tags on it, you were the king of it. You have the most throw-ups, fill-ins, outlines, tags, what you were supposed to do. Once when you got king of one line, like I was on the 4th, you go and wanted to become king of the 2 and 5. So it was a good feeling, man, especially to see your name rolling through the subway system of New York.
HHWS: How is it to be down with graffiti such a long time?
COPE2: It’s crazy. Sometimes I don’t understand why I’m still here and doing this. So many years I’m doing this and it’s hard to stop and I think I’ll never stop. It’s really amazing. I don’t know, maybe it’s gods plan for me to be Cope2. I love it and it’s my way of living, so I don’t understand this sometimes.
HHWS: You experienced a lot, but happening was the best for you?
COPE2: The best was the subway trains in the early 80ies. It was nothing better than painting the subway trains in New York because that is the history and I wish I can go back. I thank god to live the time and to paint the subway trains in the early 80ies.
HHWS: In your opinion, what is a good style?
COPE2: My opinion of a good style is to represent yourself. Just be yourself, clean and with nice colors. Trying to be original what is hard because you always learned from someone. Just do your own style.
HHWS: Do you mean with original being original to yourself or the history in New York?
COPE2: Be original to yourself, be real to yourself. You gonna learn from somebody, if it’s New York or anywhere in the world. Be yourself. Original!
HHWS: What impressions do you have in relation of Germany?
COPE2: The graffiti, man. It’s amazing how they do the subways and the walls. I don’t understand it. I give them so much probs. There is so much energy and power. I never thought, 25 years ago when I was writing on New York subway trains, that know it would be all over the world and you got writers from Germany who do some crazy dope hot shit. It’s great that they do the trains and wholecars. I saw this wholecars on German subway trains, it was regret, man I did wholecars in New York back in the early 80ies. The German graffiti is amazing, I love it.
HHWS: How do you see the connection form writing to the hiphop culture?
COPE2: HipHop culture is always being writing, breakdancing, dj’ing and mc’ing. Not every graffiti artist likes HipHop, there are writers who likes Heavy Metal or Rock. So I think graffiti has its own culture, its own world, which is really awesome. We don’t need Rap, we don’t need DJ’ing, and Graffiti writer can be anyone. And that it’s what it makes so unique.
HHWS: The internet is a worldwide platform for writer. What do you think about this?
COPE2: It’s crazy. It used to be Graffiti magazines, now it’s the internet. If you do a throw-up then it is in the internet in about 5 minutes and the whole world can see it. I don’t understand it; I guess it’s just the time and the live. Everything is changing and you have to go with the changes and the time.
HHWS: What plans do you have for the future?
COPE2: I don’t know, take it by the flow day by day and just be me, Cope2. You know, I do my think and travel the world and do art shows. Perhaps one day a business with graffiti. Just trying to be myself.
HHWS: Do you still go out and bomb?
COPE2: Oh yeah, of course, I still bomb. I don’t give a fuck because we don’t live forever. Just fuck it. Represent your thing and do it for yourself. I love to bomb. I try to do trains but I also try to be cool because the law in New York is still stressing me. I try to be a little easier.
HHWS: I saw your video where you are bombing.
COPE2: Yeah, that was about 6 years ago. That brought me a lot of problems with the law in New York. But now I’m working on “Cope2 – The Graffiti Overdose”, what is coming out in Christmas time. It’s ridiculous. Go out and watch for that.
